Understanding the Difference Between Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC
There’s quite a bit of science going on inside the cannabis products you’ll get at our dispensary. We know that, for most people, all they’re interested in is getting the right kind of high. However, did you know that the THC in marijuana comes in different forms and that these can have different effects?
You’ve probably heard of delta-9 THC, but there’s a lesser-known version called delta-8 THC. So, what exactly is the difference between delta-8 and delta-9 THC? Let’s find out.
What Are Delta-9 and Delta-8 THC?
Delta-9 THC is what gives you the high you’re after. This compound occurs in greater concentrations in the marijuana plant and binds strongly to the cannabinoid receptors in your brain.
Delta-8 THC, on the other hand, only occurs in trace amounts and is delta-9’s isomer. This means that it has a similar chemical formula, but with atoms arranged in a slightly different configuration.
How Do Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC Differ?
Why does knowing about delta-8 and delta-9 matter? You have to understand that, while cannabis has been around for a lot longer than some might realize, there’s still plenty of research taking place.
This ongoing research not only helps us understand the plant and its psychoactive effects better but also contributes to the great strides being taken in making marijuana more accepted.
With that in mind, let’s weigh these two compounds against each other and see how they differ.
Chemical Structure Differences
We’ll begin by looking at the chemical structure of these two compounds. Though they do share a similar source, their makeup is slightly different.
Yes, both have double-carbon bond structures. However, in delta-8 THC, the double bond is on the eighth and ninth chains of carbon atoms. Alternatively, in delta-9 THC, the double bond happens on the ninth and tenth chains of carbon atoms.
Potency Differences
Delta-9 THC is, hands down, more potent than delta-8 THC. In fact, research suggests that delta-8’s potency is about half that of its counterpart.
This reduced potency is thought to be due to delta-8’s lower concentrations. Its chemical makeup also plays a part in the compound’s low cannabinoid receptor binding affinity.
Psychoactive and Side Effects Differences
Due to the wide gap in potency, delta-8 THC tends to produce a milder effect than delta-9. Many delta-8 users report experiencing more in the way of euphoria, pain relief, and relaxation.
Their side effect profiles also differ slightly. For instance, delta-8 users risk experiencing dizziness, vomiting, tremors, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
In addition to some of those same side effects, delta-9 THC can cause:
- Hallucinations
- Paranoia
- Dry mouth
- Sedation
- Headaches
- Eye redness
Regulatory Differences
Delta-9 THC is better regulated, with many states legalizing it for medical and/or recreational use. What’s more, each state has distinct regulations for the safety testing and quality control of standard cannabis products.
Unfortunately, when it comes to delta-8 THC, its legal status in the United States is more of a gray area. Currently, there are no regulations and safety testing for delta-8 products. Though the 2018 farm bill legalized hemp and the derivatives that have less than 0.3% delta-9 THC, there hasn’t been much clarification beyond that.
What’s more, companies making delta-8 do so by chemically converting CBD, a process that creates several byproducts that are yet to be adequately studied.
Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC in Summary
What is the difference between delta-8 and delta-9 THC? You might find both in the cannabis plant. However, they do have a few slight differences.
For starters, delta-9 THC is more naturally concentrated and produces that standard marijuana high you’re familiar with. Delta-8, on the other hand, is not as prevalent, potent, or regulated.
Also, while the mild psychoactive effects it produces can be beneficial to some, there’s still a lot we have to learn about it. With this in mind, it might be better to stick with the safer, more regulated delta-9 THC and figure out a dose that works for you.
