Before Trying a Recipe, Start With Decarboxylation

You need to put your marijuana through a decarboxylation process before you can use it in recipes for edibles. This process unlocks and activates the THC in the cannabis, giving you the results you want.

To decarboxylate it, spread the ground marijuana evenly on a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bake the ground marijuana for about 30 minutes for an older strain. Fresher weed with a higher moisture content should bake for about 45 minutes. Baking it longer or using a higher temperature does not make it more potent.

Many marijuana-edible recipes call for cannabutter, which you can make yourself or purchase pre-made.

To make your own, melt one pound of butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add about one-half ounce of decarboxylated cannabis to the butter and let it simmer for at least two hours while keeping it from boiling. Then, strain it through cheesecloth into a jar and allow it to resolidify.

You can store the cannabutter safely in the refrigerator for several weeks.

It’s important to use regular butter with a normal fat content to create cannabutter. Infusing your cannabis with a type of fat is the key to allowing it to fully absorb the THC and give you the desired effect. Avoid using a butter substitute when creating your own cannabutter.

The Classic Cannabis Brownies

If this is your first time trying your hand at cannabis edible recipes, you can’t go wrong with the classic pot brownies.

You can use your favorite brownie recipe. However, you’ll substitute cannabutter for regular butter. If your recipe calls for eight ounces of butter, use eight ounces of cannabutter for a stronger effect, or mix it with some regular butter to tone down the effect.

Cannabis Hot Cocoa

When you want to relax with a cup of cocoa on a cool New Jersey evening, why not make it into an edible? Use your favorite hot cocoa recipe that features butter, or use the following recipe, which includes:

  • 4 tablespoons of cannabutter
  • 3 cups of whole milk
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons of dark chocolate (finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch

Melt the cannabutter over medium heat. As soon as it starts to bubble, add the milk and heavy cream.

Reduce the heat so the mixture doesn’t boil. Once it starts to simmer at the edges, add the dark chocolate. Then, mix all the dry ingredients and slowly add them to the simmering liquid while whisking the mixture.

Cook everything for around five minutes until it slightly thickens. It will thicken further as it cools.

Popcorn With Cannabutter Flavoring

When you want to relax with a movie, popcorn coated in cannabutter is one of the most popular cannabis edible recipes.

You can pop your favorite popcorn, including microwave popcorn. An average bag of microwave popcorn creates about 10 cups of popcorn.

Add about two tablespoons of melted cannabutter to the 10 cups of popcorn. Mix the cannabutter with regular butter to cut down on the effect of the cannabis. You can add other flavorings if desired.

Crispy Rice Treats With Cannabis

If you’re a fan of gooey sweets like Rice Krispies treats, you can infuse them with cannabis to create an edible.

Use your favorite recipe that features Rice Krispies or another crispy rice cereal. However, instead of using regular butter, substitute cannabutter.

Most people will want to use half cannabutter and half regular butter. However, you can intensify or reduce the effect you receive from the THC by using more or less cannabutter.
